Strong local support from the Walcha Region helped Southcote Shorthorns to a $17,000 top at the Stud’s third on property Sale on Friday the 4th of August. Southcote successfully cleared 26 bulls to average $8,181 with all successful purchasers in attendance.

Top price bull was Southcote Stunner S37, Sired by Southcote Precision P44 and out of a Southcote Hero H1 Dam was a clear stand out for Clive, Natasha and Emma Pearson from Armidale. S37 wrapped the combination of muscle, softness and structural correctness in a soft roan, homozygous polled package. This phenotype was backed by a positive data in IMF, Fat, Rib Eye Area and breed average Birth Weight figures.

The Pearson family attended the sale for the first time in 2022, where they successfully purchased one new sire and returned to purchase 3 sires in the 2023 sale.

Stunner is the third Southcote Precision P44 bull to top the Southcote on property Sale, Southcote Roy R1 who sold to the Faulks Family and Southcote R2D2 who was purchased in 2022 by Futurity Pastoral & the Williamson Family. Southcote Pression P44 has been heavily used in the Southcote Progeny test herds and is a benchmark sire in the Southern Multi Breed project.

Southcote Solar S28 was purchased by Weebollabolla Shorthorns, Moree for $12,000. The son of Southcote Maximum Impact M7, was the second heaviest bull in the draft, second highest scanning for IMF and EMA. The phenotype was backed up with a data set of top 15% for 8 traits including IMF, Fat and Growth Traits.

Southcote Solar is the second sire that Weebollabolla has purchased from Southcote, with Weebollabolla’s earlier purchase Southcote Leadfoot L13 having 8 sons represented in their upcoming on property sale.

Southcote Maximum M7 Impact also sired the second top price bull, Southcote Socks S15, which sold locally to Jason Marchant for $15,000. The Marchant Family have been purchasing multiple sires from the Southcote program for a number of years.

Repeat purchase once again provide a strong floor in the sale, with the 2023 sale seeing an average distance travelled for bulls sell at 17km from the front gate.

Mr Martin commented that “Southcote has always had strong local support from the Walcha district, with most neighbours using Southcote Genetics. This is really pleasing as these are the people that drive past the program every day and the genetics are working for them at home.”

The future looks exciting for the future sales for Southcote Shorthorns, through there multi-faceted approach to breeding genetics to improve the Australian beef herds.
